Artists Space took a momentous step in the last year and signed a twenty-year lease on what will be our most substantial home to date—our sixth location in downtown New York since 1972—at 80 White Street. Totaling 7,700 square ft, divided evenly between upstairs and downstairs, this will be our largest exhibition venue to date. The space harkens to the original artist lofts and artist-run spaces that defined downtown as a place for artists. It was far from a given, amidst the tumult of New York real estate, that Artists Space would stay downtown, and we’re truly grateful to have been able to secure this magnificent space to continue our vital work in the city. A substantial renovation of the space is currently in progress and Artists Space will reopen later this year.
Originally founded in 1972 at 155 Wooster Street, it moved to 105 Hudson Street in 1977, to 223 West Broadway in 1984, and to 38 Greene Street in 1993 through 2016. Artists Space most recently operated out of Artists Space Books and Talks at 55 Walker Street.
